High Test Deli & Sweet Shop

High Test Deli and Sweet Shop, also known as the Filling Station, is a brick-walled daytime deli in the middle of downtown Bryson City. It's an order-at-the-counter spot, small inside, with a row of rocking chairs out front for the wait or the eating. The sandwiches are the reason it ranks near the top of every Bryson City list. The Cuban is the headliner, pressed crisp around roasted pork and pickles, and the Reuben holds its own with corned beef, Swiss, and kraut. Regulars also swear by the Italian Turbo. Most everything is made to order, from the soups to the garlicky potato salad to the sweet potato fries. The gluten-free menu is unusually good here, to the point that a Cuban on their gluten-free bread can pass for the regular version. Save room for a handmade ice cream sandwich, stacked between fresh cookies. A few notes: it's a lunch-hours operation, the seating is limited, and busy midday stretches move faster if you plan on takeout. Their motto is Let R Deli Fill Yer Belly, and they mean it. Order the Cuban, add a cookie sandwich, find a rocking chair.
