What matters most?

Best for fewest crowds
January & February & December

Quietest trails — the highest crowd rating means the fewest people.

  • Jan: Cold and quiet — the year's emptiest trails, but Clingmans Dome Rd is closed and snow can shut Newfound Gap Rd.
  • Feb: Still wintry and peaceful; high roads stay closed, but lower trails and Cades Cove are wide open and uncrowded.
  • Dec: Cold, short days and near-empty park; Clingmans Dome Rd closes and snow can affect high roads.

Best Time to Visit the Smokies FAQ

When is Great Smoky Mountains National Park least crowded?

The Smokies are least crowded in winter — January and February weekdays are the quietest, with empty trails and easy parking (though Clingmans Dome Road and some high-elevation roads close December through March). For a quiet shoulder window with milder weather, weekdays in early March or late November are good bets. As the most-visited national park in the country, the Smokies reward midweek visits in any season.

What is the best month to visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park?

October is the headline month for fall foliage, with the slopes blazing in color from early October at high elevations to late October in the valleys — but it's also the single busiest stretch of the year. For a better balance of good weather and thinner crowds, April and May bring spring wildflowers, and June lights up Elkmont with the synchronous fireflies (access is by lottery).

When is Great Smoky Mountains National Park the busiest?

The Smokies are busiest in summer (June through August) and during October leaf season, when traffic on Newfound Gap Road and the Cades Cove loop can crawl for hours on weekends. Holiday weekends and the peak fall-color weekends in mid-to-late October are the most congested of all. Visit midweek and start early to beat the crush.

Does Cades Cove or Clingmans Dome Road close in winter?

Newfound Gap Road (US-441) stays open year-round but can close temporarily after snow and ice. Clingmans Dome Road and several secondary roads close every winter, typically December 1 through March 31. The Cades Cove Loop Road stays open year-round (weather permitting). Always check current road status with the park before a winter visit.
